OBJECTIVESAs a registered charity, our objectives are:
We also run Rose House (our HQ at the pond end of the High Street) as a centre for our activities. FUNDINGWe are the only community association in the country that relies totally on its own funds and has no financial support from any council body. We hold a variety of fund-raising events throughout the year, Barnes Fair being our most impressive venture. The Fair is held on the second Saturday in July and covers the whole of Barnes Green. In October we hold our famous Jumble Sale in Kitson Hall and in December we have a Late Night Shopping Evening when the local shops stay open late and a Christmassy welcome awaits everyone (including Father Christmas himself!) BCA STAFFAdministratorJulia Bebington is our Administrator. Julia has been working for the BCA for over 12 years in a variety of roles. She has been the administrator for Barnes Fair, allocated the stalls and organised the other events such as the jumble sale, etc. for a number of years, before taking over from Jennie Martin as Administrator. The Administrator’s role is very varied and includes dealing with the
general running of the BCA, room lettings, and the preparation of Prospect,
membership subscriptions, etc. The office (on the first floor of Rose
House) is open to the public between the hours of 9.30 and noon daily. Events OrganiserThis post involves the organising of the events run by the Barnes Community Association. Hilary McGough has been in the post since September 2003. In October, we have our huge Jumble Sale which is one of our main fund-raising events, then in December we hold our Late Night Christmas Shopping Evening when Father Christmas comes to Barnes and we have open house at Rose House – the BCA headquarters. Later in December Hilary organises a carol singing session around Barnes to raise money for a local charity. Then, Christmas Day is very busy as we hold our annual Christmas Lunch at The Barnes Green Day Centre where anyone lonely or by themselves at Christmas can come along and have lunch and join in the entertainment. And after all the excitement of Christmas, it's time to start taking
bookings for stalls at the next Barnes Fair, as booking
begins in January and demand is always heavy. Barnes Fair AdministratorThe Administrator for Barnes Fair is Charlotte Sharpe-Neal,
who is employed by the BCA to do the detailed planning of the Fair and
to act on decisions made by the Barnes Fair Steering Group. This includes
liaising with the Council and Police, making arrangements for all the
equipment and entertainment for Fair Day, and preparing the programme.
The Steering Group is made up of volunteers who work tremendously hard
to find advertisers and sponsors, organise the traffic of Fair Day, run
the Parade, and many other activities. Book-keeperGlynis Potter is our Book-keeper and has worked for the BCA for several years. She had a varied accounts career and previously worked for some of the public limited companies in the City where she was acclaimed as one of the fastest number crunchers in the west, but now enjoys cycling to work from her home in Barnes. The Book-keeper’s role involves banking, sorting out queries of a financial nature and period analysis of the BCA’s income and expenditure. Barnes Commonkeeper Our commonkeeper is Russell Greaves who has been in
the post for over three years, having worked previously at The London
Wetland Centre. The role consists essentially of carrying out and organising
works on and around the Green whilst liasing with local authorities, services,
and contractors. There is a particular focus on managing Barnes Pond (redeveloped
2000) for wildlife and as a local amenity. Retail ChampionSue Nichol has taken up the newly-created post of Retail
Champion for Barnes. The area for which she has responsibility extends
from North Barnes, through Church Road, Station Road, and the High Street
to White Hart Lane. Her remit is to gain an understanding of the major
issues facing all Barnes traders, to develop and maintain contacts with
the local community (local councillors, planners, etc) and to work with
traders to fight for their interests, whether to do with business rates,
rents, parking, planning or indeed any other matter than concerns them.
She also works to publicise the attraction of village shopping to residents
and non-residents alike and, in general, acts as the voice of the Barnes
traders. Matched funding for her work in this essential community service
is provided by the BCA and the Council. Click HERE
to read more about Sue's work in her blog. OPENING HOURSRose HouseOur headquarters at Rose House in Barnes High Street are staffed by volunteers daily between 10am and 4pm. We offer a photocopying service and can help with local enquiries. BCA OfficeThe office is usually staffed between 9.30am and 12 noon, Monday to Friday. At other times staff may well be working and be available for members but it would be wise to telephone in advance to make an appointment. Julia works every morning and Hilary McGough is usually available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. There may be slight variations from time to time, particularly at half terms, although somebody should be available. Rose House closes for the entire month of August for maintenance and redecoration works. In addition, the office and reception close for the last week of July although regular activities take place as usual. We also close for the Christmas holidays. Exact dates of closures will be published in advance in Prospect and on the website.
