Barnes definitely was a nice area. Even though I only lived there for a relatively short period of time, I did get a good impression. Very nice to go jogging along the Thames. Too bad Hammersmith Bridge was only open for busses, hence you had to make a detour to get to Barnes when coming from the north - should be open by now..

Lived in Barnes 1953 to 1964 and couldn't wait to get out to London proper. (Have you noticed how enclosed Barnes is?) The awful jams on the No. 9 bus en route to school in Hammersmith, the cinema closed down, then the choice between bus,and tube (oh the delays on the Metropolitan Line) to work or the hike across the common for the SR to Waterloo and then the crush on the Drain and the long trek up to Bank Station before they put in the Travolator. No, it was neither country nor town though it might as well have been the former for the length of time it took from door to door. Oh and by the way Castelnau was called Castelnau all the time I lived in Barnes, Bridge Road was as I recall just the last bit before the Bridge. And the last time I passed by, the Boileau Arms had become a curry house! and most of the big houses along the road seem to have been carved up into flats. Still, it looks pretty (is the Common safe yet?) and there were wonderful blackberrying days............

Just discovered this site. I lived in Barnes from 1954 to 1980 when I moved to Hampton. I lived in Everdon Rd on the old council estate and went to Lowther Primary school and then Shene Grammar. The Sun Inn was my first pub and I always make sure to pop in for a pint when I am back in the UK. I used to work Sundays in the "Can Can" coffee bar on the High Street in the very early 70's. I would love to hear from anybody who remembers me or my family. Barnes will always be the home in my heart.

Was looking for information on my Ancestors. I have Thomas Barnes, born around 1636 somewhere in England. He came across on the Speedwell in 1656.

Being an born and bred Barnesite now living in Staffordshire it is really nice to read about Barnes. I have many tales to tell of my happy life in Barnes so if you need any blasts from the past please contact me, many of them amusing. It would also be nice to know if any of my old school friends still live in Barnes. I went to Mortlake County Girls School, Hertford Avenue in the 50's.

I worked as a Nanny in three different houses on Castelnau in 1996-97. I lived with Liz Light and she was involved with the BCA. I found Barnes to be a wonderful place to live in and coming from such a young country I found it full of history. I loved walking around Barnes (because it was so flat) and seeing all the beautiful old buildings. I hope to come back and visit London next year and Barnes will be the first place I will visit.
